Modernizing a Global SAP Company

We helped one of the world’s largest chemical companies select an IPaaS vendor and implement our Modernization methodology to replace legacy vendors IBM and webMethods.

Impact

The migration from slower on-prem legacy systems helped enable Ashland Chemicals migration to S/4 HANA. We helped reduce the time to integrate applications by more than 50%. The migration saved Ashland Chemicals millions of dollars in hardware, maintenance, and upgrade costs.

Story

SAP’s push to their latest cloud solution, HANA, has been a catalyst for many companies to consolidate their integration platforms to the cloud. One of these examples is Ashland Chemicals. Ashland Chemicals is a global multinational that serves more than 100 countries and provides ingredients for a wide range of industries, including personal care, pharmaceuticals, construction, automotive, food, and energy.

With their migration to SAP HANA, Ashland conducted a selection process to select the best IPaaS solution for their needs after HANA. After looking at MuleSoft, SAP, and others, Ashland selected Boomi and TechStone.

The constant growth of integrations has created a complex environment consisting of spaghetti code. This made upgrades and support difficult as well as costly. This highly customized platform also hampered the ability to react to the business and develop integrations for speed of market. With their migration to HANA, they needed a modern solution.
The first step was migrating their EDI/B2B systems from IBM WDI to Boomi. This involved extensive optimization and architecture design, as these processes were highly customized. In parallel, TechStone migrated its highly customized webMethods integrations to Boomi.

For modernization, TechStone implemented;

  • Optimization methodology
  • Error handling/querying
  • Established reuse
  • Established Best Practices
